Aston Villa vs Arsenal (31/08/2026)
In the second round of the Premier League, Arsenal players will travel to Birmingham, where they will face the home side Aston Villa

Mikel Arteta's side kicked off the new Premier League campaign against newcomers Coventry, putting in a very impressive performance which they also crowned with a commanding 3-0 victory. Now Arsenal face their first away match of the new season, in which they will play in the intimidating atmosphere of Villa Park. On paper, therefore, it should be a much more demanding fixture both because of the quality of the opposition and the away environment. On the other hand, Aston Villa are not having an ideal start to the new campaign, not only in terms of results, but also from the perspective of injuries and activity in the transfer market (sales of key players). I would not forget to mention that this will be a very special match for Ezri Konsa, who transferred to Arsenal just before the start of the season from Aston Villa itself. The match at Villa Park will thus quite likely be his first appearance in the shirt with the cannon on his chest.

While the charges of Mikel Arteta's Having won both the Community Shield match and their opening league fixture, Aston Villa first failed to overcome PSG in the Super Cup and subsequently suffered a heavy 4–0 defeat away to Brighton in their domestic league.

Expected line-up

Arsenal will also be missing defenders for the second round of the Premier League William Saliba and Jurriën Timber. Conversely, the Gunners' newest defensive signing, Ezri Konsa, will be ready for the match against his former club and is even expected to start in the starting line-up. We shall see whether these expectations are truly fulfilled or whether Konsa will begin among the substitutes. Another good piece of news is that Bruno Guimarães, who missed the first round of the competition, rejoined team training during the week. The Brazilian international should now be available.

Match

Even if I set aside the current results of both teams this season, which I've mentioned several times already today, I see Arsenal as the clear favourites for the clash at Villa Park. I'll probably be repeating myself a lot in this section of the blog this season, but the strength of the team that finally won the Premier League last season is immense. And it should be even greater this year, as significant reinforcements have arrived at the Emirates Stadium in the form of Bruno Guimarães, the aforementioned Ezri Konsa, and Christos Tzolis, a name who is unassuming yet impressive in his performances. And that might not even be all, as it's no secret that Arsenal are looking to strengthen their attack, specifically the left wing, or alternatively the centre-forward position. If you're interested in everything regarding Arsenal's transfers, be sure to keep an eye on the live updates before the transfer window closes on 1 September 2026 at transfer window special, where you will find everything essential.

Back to the match between Aston Villa and Arsenal. There is probably little point in embarking on any deep analysis; Arsenal have a higher-quality and deeper squad, the core of the team has been together for several years, so Mikel Arteta can also rely on the synergy and ingrained automatisms of his players. The psychological state will also work in the Gunners' favour. Probably Aston Villa's only advantage will be their home turf. When I add it all up, Arsenal should dominate the match and see it through to a victorious end. The Premier League can certainly serve up all sorts of surprises, but this time I believe that the North London side will live up to their favourites' tag and take all three points away from Villa Park.

Score prediction

I revealed that I believe in an Arsenal victory just a few lines above, so now all that remains is to add a prediction for the exact score. I expect a solid defensive performance with a clean sheet and a relatively comfortable three points. I'm tipping an Arsenal 2:0 win.
