Illan Meslier began his footballing journey at the Merlevenez club, from where he soon moved to Lorient, where he developed as a footballer and simultaneously entered the world of professional football. At just nineteen years old, the French goalkeeper was spotted by English club Leeds United, where he initially arrived on loan before making a permanent transfer. He spent a long seven years with the English outfit, who during his tenure were on the fringes of the Premier League and Championship. Meslier made over two hundred competitive appearances for Leeds and also featured for France's youth teams, among other achievements. Although he spent a significant part of his career with the club from the north of England, he was not offered a contract extension upon the expiry of his deal after the 2025/2026 season, a situation that Arsenal capitalised on, bringing Meslier into their squad as a free agent.
