The new season is here and, as is tradition in England, it will kick off with a clash between the winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup. I certainly don't need to remind anyone who conquered England's top flight last season. If anyone happens to need reminding, however, I am more than happy to repeat that, after an endless wait, the reigning Premier League champions are London club Arsenal. Manchester City managed to win the FA Cup, so in the match for the first trophy of the 2026/2027 season, the Community Shield, we will see a battle between Arsenal and Manchester City. The match, scheduled for this Sunday, 16 August 2026, at 16:00 (CET), will not take place this time at the English footballing cathedral of Wembley, but in Cardiff, specifically at the Principality Stadium. Will Mikel Arteta add his third Community Shield to his managerial collection, or will the Cityzens' new boss, Enzo Maresca, celebrate for the first time in his career?

Form
Given that this is the first competitive match of the season, we cannot really talk about the current form of the teams. However, in the tables attached below, you will find at least the results of both teams' pre-season matches, which, however, given their nature, are not very telling. The players of Mikel Arteta's they played four friendly matches, whereas Manchester City players played one game fewer.

Expected line-up
Given that players joined the pre-season gradually due to the recent World Cup, it can be expected that Arsenal (and indeed Manchester City) will not field their strongest possible line-up. A significant portion of the players, particularly the England and Spain internationals, only joined the team for pre-season a few days ago, so it is logical that we will most likely not see them in the starting XI. You can view below what, in my opinion, the line-up might look like that the Spanish manager sends into the battle for the first trophy of the season.
As for absences, apart from the two defenders who are still injured William Saliba and Jurriën Timber all other players should have been ready for the match against Manchester City.

Match
To be honest, I don't think we'll see a very attractive contest. Although both camps are saying it's not a friendly match, we all know very well how teams approach the Community Shield fixture. I'm certainly not trying to say that both teams will slack off, but after all, it is the first competitive match of the season, which in itself always plays a significant part. This year, a lot of players joined pre-season preparations later due to their participation in the World Cup. To make matters worse, the transfer window is in full swing, so practically no club's squad is final. That of course applies to both Arsenal and Manchester City in terms of both arrivals and departures.
So what to expect from the match itself? I probably don't need to emphasise too much that this is a clash between two top teams, so I'll focus instead on what Sunday's match specifically might offer. On neither side will we see the strongest possible line-ups, or rather, a number of key players will either not feature in the match at all or will come on during the course of it. And from my perspective, that will be the most crucial factor influenced by the managers themselves. Will both bet on the best they have available from a player perspective given the circumstances, or will they favour players who have completed a full pre-season? Whatever the line-ups on both sides turn out to be, I expect a close match that perhaps won't be played at the kind of tempo we are accustomed to from the Premier League. The contest will have a certain level of quality, there is no doubt about that, but I'll venture to say we are not in for a glowing advertisement for football—though I might be wrong.
Score prediction
As I already mentioned today, there are terribly many variables going into the match between Arsenal and Manchester City, which is why there isn't much to go on even when predicting the exact score of the match. Nevertheless, as was to be expected, I believe in Arsenal. Mikel Arteta should have immense quality on the bench, which could be the differentiating factor. I'm predicting a 2:1 win for Arsenal.
