Arsenal vs Coventry (21 August 2026)
Arsenal will enter the 2026/2027 Premier League season with a home match against Coventry, who are one of this year's three newly promoted teams

Although the new Premier League season kicks off on Friday 21 August 2026 with a match featuring Arsenal, who host promoted side Coventry in the first round in north London, Mikel Arteta's side actually started their competitive season last weekend. Arsenal featured in the FA Community Shield match, in which the league winners and the FA Cup winners traditionally face each other before the start of the new campaign. A battle against Manchester City thus awaited Arsenal, which ultimately ended in a clear 3-0 victory for Arsenal. The fans of the north London club could hardly have wished for a better start to the 2026/2027 season. In addition to winning their first trophy (although it is not as highly valued in England as others) and a dominant result, a very mature and dominant performance by the Spanish manager's charges was also on display. Let us hope that Arsenal's players will continue in this established trend in the match against Coventry too.

Form

Given that our season is only just starting, we will have to make do for now at least with a more modest overview, which moreover consists overwhelmingly of pre-season matches from which no major conclusions can be drawn.

Expected line-up

The long-term injured player will not feature in the opening round of the Premier League William Saliba. Most likely, he will also be missing from the squad Jurriën Timber, who is close to a return to full fitness, but will miss the match against Coventry according to available information. And that should be it for Arsenal's absences, with all other squad members available Mikel Arteta to count on at the start of the path to defending the title.

Match

When I watched some of Arsenal’s pre-season friendlies – in which, admittedly, a number of key players were often missing – I was slightly concerned about the start of the new season. After all, the Gunners’ pre-season training camp was significantly affected by the World Cup, so there was really very little time for a proper build-up this year. However, the Community Shield match against Manchester City put my mind at ease. A mature team performance, impressive individual displays, tremendous depth on the bench – all that and much more was on show from Arsenal. The result itself probably speaks for itself.

Now let's move on to the first-round match of the English top flight against Coventry. Although I don't know much about the Coventry team, who were promoted to the English elite from first place in the Championship with a comfortable margin, I think Arsenal should dominate the newcomers in every respect. In addition to quality parameters, whether we are talking about the team as a whole or individuals, the Gunners will also be in a good psychological state after their victory against the Citizens. Last but not least, the match will be played at the Emirates Stadium, so Frank Lampard's charges are in for a really difficult match. Anything can happen in football, but I believe that Arsenal will deal with Coventry in front of their home fans and win without major problems.

Score prediction

While early-season matches can be tricky, given everything mentioned above, I expect a comfortable victory for the Gunners. My prediction is a 3-0 win to Arsenal.
