Manchester City vs Arsenal (19/04/2026)
The Premier League title race is heating up, with leaders Arsenal heading to the home of second-placed Manchester City.

Honestly, I don't know how to start today at all. Before a completely fundamental title fight, so many emotions are mixing within me that I'll be glad if I can put together at least a few meaningful sentences. Frustration from previous seasons, fear that Arsenal will once again let the title slip through their fingers at the last minute, but also the belief that it will simply work out this year. I really can't express how much I would like the team to Mikel Arteta's at the end of the season, he lifted the Premier League trophy above his head. Let it be by one point or by goal difference, but let Arsenal finally sit on the throne of English football after twenty-two years. Then everyone can say what they want. The title is the best possible answer to any criticism. To achieve this, Arsenal will need to pick up points against a rampaging Manchester City. Is it a difficult task? Yes, it is, but it is not unsolvable. If the Gunners really want to win the title, they must also manage games like this.

Form

The form of both teams since the last international break diametrically opposed, but I think this time it won't play as crucial a role as it does at other times. The Sunday match isn't just an ordinary game and it could be said that it stands out from the others in its weight and appearance, approaching the end of the competition. The battle at the Etihad Stadium will be purely about who wants it more and also about who has more courage. In any case, you won't miss out on an overview of the form and latest results of both teams today either. You will find everything essential in the following tables.

Team and expected line-up

The internet is full of all sorts of analysis and recommendations ahead of Arsenal's away match against the Cityzens, how Arsenal should line up at the Etihad Stadium and how they should play. While I plan to comment on some players and variations, I will try here to get into Mikel Arteta's head as much as possible and come up with the most accurate expected lineup. Let's get to it.

Manchester City vs Arsenal team (19 April 2026)
Raya - Timber, Saliba Gabriel, Hincapié - Zubimendi, Rice, Eze - Madueke, Martinelli, Gyökeres

Predicted Manchester City vs Arsenal line-up

Defence

The defensive linchpin will not be missing from the goal, David Raya. The same applies to the central defensive pairing William Saliba and Gabriel. On the left side of the defence, the place in starting line up will be held, despite the very probable return of Riccardo Calafiori , by Piero Hincapié. For me, betting on the Ecuadorian representative is clearly the best option at the moment. At the other end of the defensive quartet, the situation is much more complicated. The clear first choice is Jurriën Timber, of that, there is no doubt. The problem is that it is not certain whether he will be able to recover health-wise. Based on some previous press conferences by Mikel Arteta, I have a hunch that we'll even see Timber in the starting lineup, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. Alternatives for the Dutch defender are Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera with the opinion that the more experienced Ben White might perhaps get the nod.

Midfield

The trio of central midfielders will run out in the same formation as in the last match against Sporting. Specifically, in the centre of the pitch we will see the trio Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze. I am firmly convinced that the team captain will be included in the nomination. Martin Ødegaard. In his case, however, I expect him to definitely start on the bench after his injury. I don't see many other realistic options for how Mikel Arteta could put together the midfield. Not even including Kai Havertz at the expense of Eberechi Ezeho this time does not seem likely to me.

Attack

The biggest question this time remains who will start on the wings and up front. Personally, I'd love to see a lineup that surprises not only the fans, but especially Pep Guardiola. Unfortunately, though, I don't think Mikel Arteta will pull any unexpected stunts. I wouldn't object if, for example Gabriel Jesus He started up front or even out wide. Likewise, I wouldn't object to some tactical changes. For example, one in which players who play „on their favoured foot“ would come on the wings. Logically, many more crosses could then fly into the Cityzens' box. And most importantly, they could come earlier, into a more open defence.

Are any of these variants likely? Probably not, and that's why I think it will jump again at the tip. Viktor Gyökeres. And on the wings, they will most likely operate with speed-tuned Noni Madueke, which should be fine and Gabriel Martinelli. A number of fans are particularly calling for a change at the tip of the attack, where they would like to see Kai Havertz, but I can't quite bring myself to believe that the Spanish manager would drop his top scorer in such a match.

Absences

Although Mikel Merino has been working individually on his return to the pitch for some time, so a long road lies ahead of him. Logically, therefore, the Spanish midfielder will not be involved in the crucial match against Manchester City. Another player who unfortunately will not be available to help his team is Bukayo Saka. Mikel Arteta confirmed at the pre-match press conference that the England international will not recover in time from the Achilles tendon injury that has been troubling him for some time. For other players who were still absent from Wednesday's match against Sporting, there is a chance they will be available. Specifically, it concerns a trio of Riccardo Calafiori, Jurriën Timber and Martin Ødegaard. As you've probably noticed, I personally believe they will be nominated.

⚠️ Suspensions:

Match

As I wrote in the introduction, I have such mixed feelings about the match that I don't even really know what to think. Manchester will be playing at home and is clearly in better form, but on the other hand, they are still six points behind Arsenal. Of course, they still have a game in hand against Crystal Palace, but they'll have to win that too to make up the current deficit. Although nobody is mentioning it much anywhere, the Cityzens will be under more pressure than Arsenal in a way. They must not lose on Sunday, and even a draw might not be enough in the final reckoning. This will be a match for everything, for both Arsenal and Manchester City..

I see it as absolutely fundamental for Sunday's battle, how the two managers will approach the match. In the first meeting of the season at the Emirates Stadium, City quickly took the lead and then surprisingly dropped deep into a defensive block. Arsenal eventually managed to equalise towards the end of the match thanks to an interplay between Eze and Martinelli, and so the game ended in a draw. On Sunday, however, we will most likely see the opposite scenario. Home side Manchester City will keep possession and push forward offensively, while Arsenal will rely on a solid defence and counter-attacking situations.. And of course, also about „dark arts“ in the form of set-pieces. I would really like to see a more proactive approach from Arsenal, who, according to Mikel Arteta, will be playing for three points, but that doesn't necessarily mean they won't also opt for the aforementioned tactic. If Arsenal bring three points back from Manchester, then I'm willing to tolerate unattractive football. In a match like that, it's all about the final result.

Tip for an accurate result

To summarise, there's really a lot at stake.. For Arsenal, it is undoubtedly the most important match in a long time.. In the battle that will, as you have no doubt read a million times everywhere, an imaginary league final, that anything can happen. The favourite is undoubtedly the home team, Manchester, but in my opinion, the most likely outcome is a draw. Despite all my fears and worries, deep down I believe Arsenal will step up and show the footballing world that they are going for the title this year. As a true fan, I therefore believe in a win. I predict a 2:1 Arsenal win.

Next match

Arsenal's next match is not until next weekend, specifically on Saturday 25. 4. 2026 from 18:30 PM (CET), when to Emirates Stadium will be welcomed as part of the thirty-fourth round Premier League This year is really unpredictable Newcastle.

See you next time, I'll look forward to it!
