That's another way to put it. to describe the Champions League final from the perspective of Arsenal, who celebrated winning the Premier League title at the weekend after twenty-two years. Mikel Arteta's charges are just one step away from football immortality, as another huge success is within their grasp. A triumph in the Champions League, which the North London footballers have never managed to win. Arsenal came closest exactly twenty years ago, when they were unable to overcome Barcelona in a memorable match in their only final in the world's most prestigious club competition to date. Less than a quarter of an hour separated Arsène Wenger's team, who played practically the entire match a man down, from winning the title. In the end, Arsenal unfortunately fell. Now, exactly two decades later, the Gunners have a second chance to lift the coveted trophy. In Budapest, which is hosting this year's final, they face the challenge of the defending champions, PSG. Will Mikel Arteta and his team write their names in golden letters in Arsenal's history?

Lately, I've often written about how a given match wouldn't be about current form. This is particularly true from Arsenal's perspective, who were chasing the league title until the penultimate round. This time, the statement holds even more weight, as the Champions League final is the absolute pinnacle of the entire season for both Arsenal and the holders, PSG. Nevertheless, you can see the last five results of both finalists across all competitions in the following tables.

Journey to the final
On Saturday evening, a clash of two completely different footballing worlds will be on display. The league's best offense will face the league's best defense. Will the well-known football saying that attack wins matches, but defense wins titles, be proven true? We'll have to wait a while longer for the answer. In the meantime, we can at least take a look at how both teams fought their way to the final.
Arsenal
Arsenal, who completely dominated the league phase, deservedly finished top of the table, giving them the advantage in all knockout-stage two-leg ties of playing the second leg at their home Emirates Stadium. What is definitely worth mentioning is that Mikel Arteta's charges won all eight matches, in which, incidentally, they conceded only 4 goals. In the next stage of the competition, the Gunners conceded just twice, meaning they head into the final with by far the best defence in the competition, but I'll get to that later. Interestingly, Arsenal became the first team to progress through the new format of the Champions League league phase with a 100% record.
Let’s move on to further statistics and numbers. Arsenal’s record so far this Champions League campaign from 14 matches played is 11 wins and 3 draws. Yes, you read that correctly, the North London club is undefeated in the Champions League this season. Let's hope Mikel Arteta's charges extend this record on Saturday and win the most prestigious club trophy for the first time in history. Back to the statistics. I’d like to add the numbers regarding goals scored and conceded, as I’ve already written about the competition’s best attack facing the best defence. I’ll start with the offense, so we have a comparison. Arsenal have managed to score a total of 29 goals, which is not a bad number at all (2.07 goals per game). However, the defence is key, which is confirmed not only by the aforementioned 6 goals conceded (0.43 goals per game) but also by 9 clean sheets.

PSG
French side PSG were not as dominant in the opening phase of the millionaire competition as expected and even had to go through a play-off to reach the round of 16, as they finished „only“ in 11th place in the regular season. This can be regarded as a below-average performance for the defending champions. On the other hand, the French team once again managed to reach the final, so it is not so important how they fought their way there.
And what do the numbers say? PSG had to play a preliminary round after the group stage, so they have played two more matches than Arsenal (16 matches). In the league stage, Luis Enrique's charges recorded 4 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses. In the knockout stage, PSG were a different proposition. Paris won six times and drew twice, improving their overall record to 10 wins, 4 draws, and 2 losses. These are statistics that even the defending champions need not be ashamed of. Unlike Arsenal, the French team relied on a fantastic offence, which scored a total of 44 goals (2.75 goals per match). It should be noted that more than half of the goals came in the knockout stage (23). For comparison, although Arsenal played 2 fewer matches, they only scored 6 goals. On the other hand, PSG's defence was certainly not flawless. The French team conceded 22 goals (1.38 goals per match).

Team and expected line-up
That Mikel Arteta will send out the strongest possible starting eleven for the match, that's absolutely clear. Nevertheless, there are several question marks in Arsenal's lineup, whether with regard to their fitness or tactics. In what formation do I think Arsenal will line up in the Champions League final?
Predicted Line-up PSG vs Arsenal
Goalkeeper
There is absolutely nothing to discuss in goal. David Raya is one of Arsenal's most important defensive assets, and so he will not be absent from the starting line-up in the biggest final that exists on the club stage. The pair will be covering his back on the bench. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Tommy Setford.
Defence
I'll start with the easiest. The centre-back partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel is a clear choice. On the left flank of the defence, in my opinion, Riccardo Calafiori will start, who has a great understanding with Leandro Trossard, who I expect to start on the left wing. This is the main reason why I am leaning towards the Italian defender getting the nod ahead of Pierem Hincapiém. The biggest question mark in defence hangs over the right-back position. Mikel Arteta will have to decide between Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera. Normally there wouldn't be much to discuss, but the situation is such that the Dutch defender hasn't played a single minute since mid-March due to injury. Although his qualities are undeniable, I think that given the lack of match practice, he will start on the substitutes' bench.
Midfield
On Wednesday, the pitch offers a whole range of options, so it's not entirely simple to guess who the Spanish manager will ultimately select for the starting eleven. The only exception is Declan Rice, whose place on the pitch is practically certain. In my opinion, Martín Zubimendi will start in the defensive or playmaking central midfield position. I wouldn't be particularly surprised by a scenario where Declan Rice drops deeper and the one, who takes over his role, will be Myles Lewis-Skelly. Let's see who ends up completing the English midfielder in the starting lineup. Martin Ødegaard will start in the playmaker role. Although another big name player could easily have started from the first minute, Eberechi Eze, but I don't believe Mikel Arteta will leave his captain on the bench in such a match.
Attack
I've already revealed one name and justified why I think they won't be missing from the starting lineup in the defenders' section. That name is Leandro Trossard, who should play on the left wing. On the opposite side of the pitch, Bukayo Saka cannot be missing, so the biggest puzzle remains the centre-forward position. Personally, I still see the situation as Mikel Arteta's first choice being Viktor Gyökeres, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll start from the first minute. We also have to consider that the match could go to extra time, or even a penalty shootout. Another reason I'm leaning towards Kai Havertz starting in the first eleven is playing style. The German international is more effective in link-up play, while Gyökeres is characterised by immense physical strength, determination, directness, and a hunger for goals. These are precisely the qualities suited to a tired opposition defence.
Absences
Given that Jurriën Timber has travelled with the squad to Budapest, the only player who will not be involved in the final match with one hundred percent certainty appears to be Ben White. All other players should be available, which is really great news before such a match.

Match
I've mentioned it myself several times today, and at the same time, I've read or seen this information discussed many times in various studies or interviews. A clash of two diametrically opposed styles is expected. Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal presents itself, or rather relies on, solid defence and systematic football, in which every situation has the „correct“ solution. Arsenal this season best embodies a pragmatic style of play that isn't as attractive to the viewer, but which can bring the desired results. On the contrary, the French defending champions rely on attack, often at the expense of defence. In addition to PSG having enormous individual quality across the entire team, Luis Enrique also gives his players a lot of freedom in the attacking phase of play, which in the vast majority of cases pays off.
The differences between the approaches of both teams can best be seen in the results from the knockout stages of the competition. If we focus on matches from the round of 16 onwards, to have an equal sample size, Arsenal won three times and drew three times in six matches with an aggregate score of 6:2. Interestingly, the Gunners always achieved exactly the result they needed. When they drew away, they won at home. Conversely, when they won away, they secured progression at home by not conceding. The ends justified the means. And what about PSG? In their case, it was absolute football in the knockout phase, which had paid off until now. In six matches, the players from the capital of France managed five wins and one draw with an aggregate score of 18:7.

Tip for an accurate result
You know what? I really believe in Arsenal to win the Champions League final, especially after winning the league title. It might not be the most exciting tip you'll come across before the match, but personally, I think Mikel Arteta's players could win in their „typical“ way this season, with a solid defence, a system, and sheer determination. I'm predicting a 1:0 win for Arsenal.
