Arsenal's players have the biggest week of their entire season ahead of them. From the club's perspective, I'd dare to say it's also the biggest week for several years. The second leg of the Champions League quarter-final, in which the charges Mikel Arteta's They will go into the second leg with a one-goal lead from the first match and subsequently the title decider in the Premier League against Manchester City. In the space of just a few days, Arsenal are within reach of the Champions League semi-finals and, at the same time, a crucial match in the fight for the league title. I won't lie, I've been nervous ever since the disappointing match against Bournemouth. I won't waffle, so let's get back to Arsenal's match against Sporting, which will decide the next Champions League semi-finalist. Arsenal are well-placed after their victory in Portugal, but they need to confirm it at home. If the Gunners progress, it will be the first time in the club's history that they have reached the semi-finals of the millionaire competition in two consecutive seasons. We now know that the opponent of the winner of the Arsenal/Sporting tie will be Atlético Madrid.

Form
After the international break, slowly but surely, you can begin to evaluate the current form of both teams. In the case of Arsenal with Sporting Are their forms mirror images of each other. At least from a results perspective. The Gunners have lost twice and won once (against Sporting, as it happens) in their three games since the break. The Portuguese team, on the other hand, has secured two victories and been outplayed once in the same number of matches (I probably don't need to specify that it was Arsenal). You can find more information, as always, in the tables below.

Team and expected line-up
Although the pre-match press conference is over, there are quite a few question marks over Arsenal's lineup. Another big question is, How will Mikel Arteta approach the match. In my opinion, there are two options. The first is to field the strongest possible eleven, with the aim of deciding the match as quickly as possible so that some of their star players can be saved for the weekend battle at the Etihad Stadium. The second option is based on the opposite approach, where players who don't normally start are given a chance, and the stars remain on the bench in case Arsenal needs to raise the quality on the pitch. Personally, I am leaning towards the Spanish manager opting for the first option.

Expected line-up Arsenal vs Sporting
There shouldn't be any surprises in goal, so we should again see between the sticks David Raya. Likewise, in the heart of the defence, I don't expect any surprises, they will field William Saliba and Gabriel. Although I have a feeling that it will appear in the nomination Jurriën Timber, So I'm leaning towards starting on the right-hand side of the defence Ben White. If Timber really makes it into the squad, we'll certainly see him on the pitch during the match. The left side of the defensive four is quite tricky. Piero Hincapié He is already training with the team, he was among the substitutes in the match against Bournemouth, so he could start at left-back against Sporting. He probably won't manage the full ninety minutes, and therefore he will most likely be replaced during the match by Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The biggest question mark over the entire lineup is the composition of the midfield. Declan Rice Martin Ødegaard is dealing with health problems, Eberechi Eze has only recently rejoined the team. Combined with the fact that the actual health status of the players remains unavailable to the public, it is extremely difficult to estimate who will play and who will be in the squad. I announced above that I think Mikel Arteta will field the strongest possible team, and I will stick to that even in the case of the central midfield. In my opinion, the most likely lineup is as follows: Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze.
In the most offensive part of the formation, the Spanish manager has a relatively wide selection available before the match against Sporting. There are plenty of options, whether on the wings or at the tip of the attack, but even so, I think we will see the same lineup as against Bournemouth. On the right side of the pitch, his place is practically certain with Saka injured Noni Madueke. The left wing currently offers more alternatives. I'm leaning towards the start Gabriel Martinelli, who is doing exceptionally well in the Champions League this year (6+2). He will start up front, just as he did a week ago, Viktor Gyökeres.
Absences
As a quick reminder to start, Mikel Merino I'm still out of the game. We can move on. One of the few things Mikel Arteta confirmed on his pre-match press conference was that there was a chance that one of the pair Jurriën Timber and Bukayo Saka makes it into the squad for the match against Sporting. Personally, I'm betting that the Dutch defender will make the squad. I am convinced that the Arsenal medical team is aiming for Saka to be ready for the match against the Cityzens. But the injury problems on Arsenal's side don't end there. There is also uncertainty surrounding captain Martin Ødegaard, but I am leaning towards him being part of the team on Wednesday and Riccardo Calafiori, whose perspective on the situation I see the opposite way. All that we need will be revealed by the official line-ups, which are usually published about an hour before kick-off.

Match
The return match against Sporting can be viewed from two angles.
The first one is that the Arsenal players have something to give back to the fans after the last league match., you might expect them to put on A high-quality and audience-pleasing performance, which will be spiced up with a few goals. In addition to confirming the good result from Portugal in the second leg, it would be ideal for the players, besides advancing to the semi-finals, to also remind themselves that they still belong to the absolute top. Why? A psychological boost would definitely come in handy for them before the weekend's match against Manchester City. I am convinced that Mikel Arteta and all his charges will now fully concentrate on the match with Sporting, so take this broader view rather as an external perspective that we fans, or the media, are most concerned with.
The second look is purely pragmatic. Let's break it down together. Arsenal have the advantage, albeit the narrowest possible, but they do. The match will be played at the Emirates Stadium. To advance, therefore, they simply need not to lose, and in my opinion, Mikel Arteta will base his tactics for the second leg precisely on that. What does that mean in practice? Maximum emphasis on ball possession, game control, and eliminating danger from the opposition. Unfortunately, for the viewer, it will most likely mean a more boring match with „waiting“ for the final whistle. In the best-case scenario, we could witness a similar flow to the Round of 16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen, which Arsenal controlled and decided fairly quickly with two goals. And you know what, why couldn't Arsenal push their performance up another notch and repeat the same result? I think they could, and that's why I'll adjust my traditional exact score prediction accordingly. I predict Arsenal to win 2:0.
Next match
The next match that Arsenal has to play can be described as to perhaps call it a Premier League final. Mikel Arteta's charges will compete in Sunday 19th of April 2026 from 17:30 (CET) No Etihad Stadium, where they will clash with Manchester City in a match that will speak volumes in the fight for the championship title.
See you next time, I'll look forward to it!
